The Complete Beginner's Guide to Oud
Everything you need to start in the world of oud — varieties, origins, the difference between natural and enhanced, and how to buy with confidence.
01
What is Oud? — The Scientific Truth
Oud is not ordinary wood. It is a rare aromatic wood formed inside Aquilaria trees when infected by a natural fungus called Phialophora. This infection causes the tree to produce a dense dark resin as a defensive response — and this resin is what gives oud its exceptional scent. Of 200 Aquilaria trees, on average only one produces oud.

Natural vs Enhanced — The Difference That Costs Thousands
This is the most important lesson for a beginner: not everything sold in the market is natural oud. Oud Index estimates 90%+ of available oud is chemically enhanced to some degree. And enhanced oud is sometimes sold at natural oud prices. The value difference between natural and enhanced can reach 20 times.

How to Buy Oud with Confidence — Practical Steps
A beginner falls into the trap of buying with blind trust in the seller. Good merchants exist — but even a good merchant can err in assessment. The right tools protect you regardless of the seller's intention.
١
Compare the price with OIBP index before buying
Price far below index = danger. Price far above = right to negotiate.
٢
For any piece above SAR 5,000 — request independent inspection
SAR 200 cost protects you from losing tens of thousands.
٣
Ask for origin and documentation
A merchant confident in their goods will not hesitate to answer.
٤
Avoid prices that are too low
Quality oud has a price floor. If the price is "unbelievable" — truly don't believe it.
